Levofloxacin Oral Route Precautions

Before you take levofloxacin, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you’re already taking any medicines, including those bought without a prescription and herbal medicines. Levofloxacin is an antibiotic medicine prescribed to treat various infections caused by bacteria. These include sinus infections (sinusitis), chest infections such as bronchitis and pneumonia, and skin infections.

This includes prescription or nonprescription (over-the-counter [OTC]) medicines and herbal or vitamin supplements. Ask your healthcare professional how you should dispose of any medicine you do not use. If you miss a dose of this medicine, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Using this medicine with any of the following medicines is not recommended.

What should I do if I forget a dose?

Mixing alcohol with fluoroquinolone antibiotics such as ciprofloxacin may increase these mental health side effects. Although an occasional drink is safe with sulfonamides, healthcare professionals should exercise caution when prescribing trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole to people who drink alcohol regularly. Since alcohol can also have negative effects on the liver, people should avoid mixing alcohol with minocycline. If you notice any other effects, check with your healthcare professional. If you have low blood potassium or an abnormally slow heartbeat, levofloxacin may increase your risk of having a fast, slow, or irregular heartbeat, loss of consciousness, or fainting spells. Levofloxacin is a type of medicine called a quinolone antibiotic.

Before having any laboratory test, tell your doctor and the laboratory personnel that you are taking levofloxacin. Talk to your doctor about the risks of taking levofloxacin or giving levofloxacin to your child. The CDC describes binge drinking as consuming four drinks for women and five drinks for men on a single occasion. Heavy drinking is eight or more drinks for women and 15 drinks or more for men per week.

Is it safe to mix alcohol and antibiotics?

For example, if you are to take one dose a day, try to take it at the same time each day. This medicine is best taken with a full glass (8 ounces) of water. Several additional glasses of water should be taken every day, unless otherwise directed by your doctor. Drinking extra water will help prevent some unwanted effects of levofloxacin.

If your or your child’s symptoms do not improve within a few days, or if they become worse, check with your doctor. It is very important that your doctor check your or your child’s progress at regular visits to make sure the medicine is working properly and to decide if you should continue to take it. Blood and urine tests may be needed to check for unwanted effects. If you need a painkiller it is safe to take paracetamol or co-codamol with levofloxacin. Do not take anti-inflammatories (NSAIDs) like aspirin, ibuprofen, diclofenac or naproxen unless these have been prescribed by your doctor.

Taking antibiotics such as metronidazole and tinidazole while consuming alcohol can cause several unwanted and potentially dangerous side effects, such as liver damage and seizures. A person may be able to drink alcohol in moderation and with caution while they are taking some types of antibiotics. However, a person should always consult a doctor before doing this.

Antibiotics such as levofloxacin will not work for colds, flu, or other viral infections. Using antibiotics when they are not needed increases your risk of getting an infection later that resists antibiotic treatment. Taking levofloxacin may worsen muscle weakness in people with myasthenia gravis (a disorder of the nervous system that causes muscle weakness) and cause severe difficulty breathing or death.

Metronidazole affects the function of a key enzyme that helps the body digest alcohol. When metronidazole inhibits the enzyme aldehyde dehydrogenase, the levels of acetaldehyde accumulate in the blood. Metronidazole is a nitroimidazole antibiotic that doctors prescribe to treat abdominal infections, sexually transmitted infections, and other anaerobic bacteria-related infections. People deficient in folic acid may be at risk of further reducing their folic acid levels while taking trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole.

If you have a severe reaction from the sun, check with your doctor. Tell your doctor right away if you or your child start having numbness, tingling, or burning pain in the hands, arms, legs, or feet. These may be symptoms of a condition called peripheral neuropathy. Do not take more of it, do not take it more often, and do not take it for a longer time than your doctor ordered. What should I know about storage and disposal of this medication?

It is also used to treat anthrax infection after inhalational exposure. Levofloxacin is also used to treat and prevent plague (including pneumonic and septicemic plague). It can weaken your immune system, prolong infection recovery, increase side effects like dizziness and drowsiness, and burden your liver, which processes alcohol and Levofloxacin. Thus, it’s generally advised to avoid alcohol while on this antibiotic.

Fluoroquinolones

You should begin to feel better during the first few days of treatment with levofloxacin. If your symptoms do not improve or if they get worse, call your doctor. There are several antibiotics that people should not mix alcohol with. Not only can they interfere with the way the antibiotics work, but they can also cause a number of harmful side effects. Scientists have linked heavy and binge drinking with an impaired immune system. People with an impaired immune system have a higher risk of infection.

Can you drink alcohol and take Levofloxacin?

Although the risks of consuming alcohol may be lower with some types of antibiotics than others, it is still advisable to avoid alcohol intake while taking any antibiotics.
