Wide-scale medical interest in psychedelics first arose in the 1950s and ’60s, and the agents were found to be notably safe, non-addictive, and of potential value for treating a wide range of psychiatric disorders. Psilocybin is a naturally occurring compound in some species of mushrooms found in tropical regions and is undergoing clinical trials for the treatment of people with resistant depression. Alzheimer’s disease, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), post-treatment Lyme disease syndrome (formerly known as chronic Lyme disease), anorexia nervosa, and alcohol use in people with major depression. In a 2017 qualitative study in Harm Reduction Journal, researchers explored how alternative treatments, including psychedelics, could help people with migraine and cluster headaches. People using these substances for this purpose reported that psilocybin, LSD, and related psychedelics worked to prevent and treat cluster headaches and migraine.
In clinical studies using standardized treatment protocols, drug effects may last for three to six hours, during which time a therapist is always present. Each treatment session is usually followed by one or more standard therapy sessions in which the experience is discussed and integrated. After the completion of two or three treatment sessions, researchers have documented continued therapeutic gains over the next year.
When Dr. Charles Nemeroff first met his patient, the 32-year-old woman had already been to see several psychiatrists. After being given antipsychotic drugs, her mania and psychosis abated, but they were replaced by debilitating depression. While the research on psychedelics as a treatment for eating disorders is in its early stages, several studies indicate promising results. They cause the neurons to fire in a very disorganized way, messing up all the inputs.
Experientially, this translates into a renewed, often very positive, sense of possibility. The 2017 study stated that participants experienced reductions in their symptoms regardless of the dose they took and questioned whether the results were influenced by a placebo effect. Some effects can include seeing bright lights and colors, shapes, and visual distortions of bodies or objects. It can also cause feelings of panic, fear, and paranoia, as well as hallucinations and uncontrollable laughter. When a person takes DXM at these higher doses, it can have hallucinatory effects. It can also cause confusion, inappropriate laughter, agitation, paranoia, and a feeling of floating.
The effects of DMT are much shorter than those of other psychedelics, typically lasting only an hour. While drugs like ketamine and psilocybin are largely considered safe, here’s what to know about who should be cautious. One quality they share is the ability to create an altered state of consciousness, commonly referred to as a trip. That effect can either provide a sense of perspective — or be downright terrifying. In a recent study, the inclusion of MDMA within a structured psychotherapy protocol had a positive effect on self-experience, self-compassion, and measures of emotion regulation.
Psilocybin is a psychedelic substance found in certain fungi, sometimes referred to as magic mushrooms. There is a wide variety of hallucinogenic mushrooms, and their legal status is somewhat ambiguous, as they can be found growing wild in many parts of the world. The following are some of the most commonly used psychedelic substances. “By the time she came to me, she said, ‘I have no feelings whatsoever. I am completely empty,’” said Dr. Nemeroff, who is chair of the department of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at the University of Texas at Austin Dell Medical School. According to the DEA, Salvia is not a controlled substance under the Controlled Substances Act, although some U.S. states do control it.
Psychedelics Are a Promising Therapy, but They Can Be Dangerous for Some
This — the psychosis followed by the deep depression — was something completely different. “You’re not likely to overdose on them, but you can have life-changing negative experiences,” Katharine Neill Harris, a drug policy researcher at Rice University in Texas, said. Alcohol and psilocybin have different chemical structures and very different effects on the body and mind. Ketamine is not a classic psychedelic but a synthetic agent with a long history of safe use as an anesthetic agent in human and veterinary medicine. It is currently used in special clinics as a rapid-acting antidepressant. 251-NBOMe is a synthetic substance originally developed by neuroscience researchers.
- Ketamine is not a classic psychedelic but a synthetic agent with a long history of safe use as an anesthetic agent in human and veterinary medicine.
- Therapists, who must receive special training and certification in the use of psychedelics, prepare patients for the experience by establishing a completely safe and trusting environment.
- MDMA stands for 3,4-Methylenedioxymethamphetamine, and is a recreational psychoactive drug.
- There is also growing evidence that psychedelic drugs operate differently in the brain than addictive drugs, and advocates have been consistently calling for legalization.
- But starting the 1990s, at first quietly, then openly, medical interest in psychedelics has been resurgent.
- They also conduct subsequent debriefing sessions to help patients consolidate insights and establish new ways of seeing themselves in relation to the world.
All current legal administration of psychedelic drugs is conducted under the direct supervision of specially certified therapists. Importantly, researchers contend that it is the psychotherapy that transforms MDMA, psilocybin, and other hallucinogens from a novelty into a medicine. Patients typically receive a moderate to large dose of psychedelic drug in each of two or three sessions spaced over several weeks.
Types of Psychedelic Drugs
However, at least one psychedelic, lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD), can cause tolerance. Tolerance means that a person may need to take higher dosages to achieve the same effect. While the woman had been treated for mild depression for over 10 years, she’d previously maintained a rich social life and fulfilling career.
It seems like psychedelics — though mostly still illegal — are everywhere. Many recreational drugs known for mind-altering trips are being studied to treat depression, substance use and other disorders. These individuals can experience ongoing mental health issues, such as paranoia, altered mood, and visual disturbances. Authors of a 2017 study into the therapeutic effects of psilocybin stated that more research is needed to confirm whether this particular psychedelic can benefit OCD after a small, 2009 study stated it decreased OCD symptoms in all of its study participants. People also use psychedelics for recreational purposes, although many psychedelic substances are controlled and illegal in the United States. NIDA supports and conducts research to learn whether some of these drugs may help treat substance use disorders in medical settings.

Renewed interest in the healing properties of such agents has led to the so-called “psychedelic renaissance,” in which many such substances are being studied for a wide range of conditions. While short-term positive and negative mood changes are common with psychedelic and dissociative drugs, more research is needed to better understand the long-term effects these substances may have on mental health. Since the Millennium, however, psychedelic agents have been gathering the interest of researchers. The drugs are administered in moderate to large doses in a specially soothing setting in the presence of a trained psychotherapist who also delivers psychotherapy. Psychedelic drugs such as psilocybin, LSD, MDMA, and other hallucinogens are controlled substances under federal law and, by statute, are deemed to have no medical use and high potential for abuse. However, several states (such as Oregon and Colorado) and municipalities (Ann Arbor, Michigan; Denver, Colorado, for example) have approved ballot initiatives decriminalizing possession of certain hallucinogens.
Marijuana and hallucinogen use among young adults reached all time-high in 2021
Traditionally, cancer care has focused on the patient’s physical experience, but there is increasing recognition of the mental toll and the need to support loved ones. Always taking their cue from the patient’s needs and the nature of their uniquely individual experience, therapists guide them through the process. Therapists help patients revisit past events and emotions that have been problematic. They also conduct subsequent debriefing sessions to help patients consolidate insights and establish new ways of seeing themselves in relation to the world. Additionally, the authors of a 2020 systematic review found evidence to further support this therapeutic use.

Psychedelics are slowly reappearing in psychology and psychiatry as a viable way to treat anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and more. However, regulated treatments are currently experimental and not accessible to many people. Psychedelic drugs are a group of substances that change or enhance sensory perceptions, thought processes, and energy levels. These substances are also known as hallucinogenic drugs or simply hallucinogens. They come in different forms, ranging from chemicals such as LSD to plants like peyote.
Hallucinogens were used in psychotherapy in the 1960s, but this was halted for mainly political reasons until quite recently. Psychological research has since revived the use of psychedelics in experimental psychological treatment. Despite their general safety, psychedelics pose a number of risks and dangers, which increase with higher dosages. The bottom line is that psychedelics are drugs that can be very dangerous if a person uses them without proper medical guidance. As those with a history of harmful drug use may find it more difficult to limit their dosage, it is safer for them to abstain.
In the most serious of cases, the long-term effects of using dissociative drugs, in particular, may include suicidal thoughts. Surgeons used PCP in the 1950s as a general anesthetic, but manufacturers stopped producing it due to its serious side effects, which included postoperative delirium and hallucinations. At high doses, PCP can cause seizures, severe muscle contractions, violent or aggressive behavior, and symptoms of psychosis. In June 2022, NIDA’s Office of Translational Initiatives and Program Innovations also announced a new program to support small businesses to develop psychedelic-based therapies for substance use disorders. Ecstasy, or MDMA, is more difficult to categorize as a psychedelic because the hallucinogenic effects are less pronounced, and the mood-enhancing and stimulant effects are more noticeable than some other psychedelics. Although peyote is a Schedule I drug, and is therefore illegal, the listing of peyote as a controlled substance does not apply to the use of peyote in religious ceremonies of the Native American Church.
